Meaning The Hearth when Translated.

A staple of any South African universities first year architecture syllabus, this iconic is still winning awards 60 years after its construction . I jumped at the opportunity to shoot this legendary home and meet the absolutely lovely Gwen Fagan, who built this home in the 60's with her late husband Gawie, one of South Africa's most renowned architects. Not only did I get to experience this amazing space up close and shoot it, I also got to sit down and chat informally with Gwen and hear some of their stories, including how the house was conceptualized while sitting on a plane on the back of a borrowed cigarette box, and of how Gawie built a yacht to race in the Cape to Rio which he won, whilst being the oldest person to do so, among others. A truly inspiring experience.
